So far this offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs had only run a few small workouts before Matt Cassel arranged a three day mini-camp with 45 players at Bishop Miege High School this week. They allowed media to watch the final practice on Thursday and Bob Gretz picked out 11 players taking part that are without a contract for 2011.
TE Brad Cottam, FB Mike Cox, DE Wallace Gilberry, S Reshard Langford, LB Corey Mays, S Jon McGraw, C Rudy Niswanger, OT Ryan O’Callaghan, TE Leonard Pope, DL Shaun Smith and [C Casey] Wiegmann.
After not seeing any sort of Chiefs football since that ugly playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens, I’m still pumped about these workouts. Even though they were all in shorts and certainly not going full speed, these are the type of things that will carry over to the beginning of training camp.
The only thing more impressive than the rookies that made the trip out to Kansas City before seeing their first NFL dollar — Jonathan Baldwin, Rodney Hudson, Justin Houston, Jalil Brown and Ricky Stanzi — is all those free agent veterans getting in the mix. Even though nearly all the unsigned players will have a good shot to make next year’s roster, the uncertainty of their contract situation had to make their agents awfully nervous.
