Kansas City Chiefs Select Ricky Stanzi, QB, Iowa

With the 135th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected QB Ricky Stanzi from Iowa.

Scouts Inc. assigned a rating of 75 to Stanzi and ranked him as the 8th QB.

Since the Chiefs traded for Matt Cassel, we have been waiting for the team to pick up a legitimate backup QB and they now have it in Stanzi.  All Stanzi did at Iowa was win for head coach — and Scott Pioli friend — Kirk Ferentz with a record of 26-9.

Call me crazy, but I like Stanzi better than Christian Ponder who was taken by the Minnesota Vikings with the 12th overall pick.  Reminds me a lot of Cassel, not only the way he’s built but also the way he plays.  Never going to beat you on the ground, but can pick up yards scrambling when he needs to.  Doesn’t bring the strongest arm to the table, but protects the football and makes the throws when given time.

The three-year starter is another perfect fit for Kansas City as a leader and team captain.
