Three Round Mock Leads With Mike Pouncey

Just days away from the first round of the NFL Draft and there is still no consensus about just what Scott Pioli and the Kansas City Chiefs are going to do with the 21st overall pick.  The latest projections from include a look at the first three rounds.

21. Mike Pouncey, OL, Florida

The twin brother of Maurkice Pouncey, who made the Pro Bowl as a rookie. While Mike Pouncey is not his brother, he is a very solid player and the Chiefs know Casey Wiegmann is at the end of his career.

55. Christian Ballard, DE, Iowa

86. Greg Little, WR, North Carolina

We’ve tossed around the Pouncey idea the last few weeks and he would be viewed as a value pick at 21, but the wrong choice for Kansas City.  Putting aside that I see him as a guard and not a center, neither position is nearly as pressing as linebacker, wide receiver, nose or offensive tackle.

For all the help the defense needs in the middle of the defensive line, taking an end in the first few rounds unless it is an elite pass rusher would be poorly using your assets.  There are a handful of top shelf defensive ends in this draft and Ballard is not one of them.  Pioli’s relationship with Kirk Ferentz doesn’t make Ballard any better of a prospect.

Little fits the mold of the type of big receiver that I’d love to see playing opposite Dwayne Bowe, but there are legitimate concerns about how a season away from football will hurt him.  The Tar Heel was suspended for the entire 2010 season after having improper contact with an agent.  To his credit, Little has taken full responsibility during the lead up to the draft, sounding very mature.

If he had never seen suspended, Little otherwise would seem to be the perfect fit for Kansas City.  Though he also wouldn’t be available in the third round had he been able to build on his impressive junior season.  Little has also played extensively as a running back, giving him a unique skill set as a wide receiver.
