The Kansas City Chiefs traded two draft picks to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for QB Alex Smith.
We knew the first pick was the Chiefs 2013 second-round pick, but the other was a conditional selection. We now know what those conditions are thanks to SI’s Peter King.
If the Chiefs finish this season 8-8 or better, the Niners will get another second-round selection. However, if Andy Reid finishes his first year in Kansas City under .500 then a third-round pick heads to San Francisco.
Though it seemed like a lot to give up for a player everyone knew would be cut if he wasn’t traded, it’s hard to complain about giving two second-round picks if Smith is good enough to lead the Chiefs into the thick of the playoff hunt. And if things don’t go as planned, Kansas City will still own their two top picks.
