O’Connell was a seventh-round pick of the Chiefs in 2009 out of Miami (Ohio) and spent each of the last four years in Kansas City. He appeared in 35 games, hauling in 15 passes for 108 yards without a score.
Despite never showing to be much of an offensive factor, O’Connell survived the coaching change from Todd Haley to Romeo Crennel thanks to his work as a blocker and on special teams.
O’Connell’s final season with the Chiefs came to an end in November when he was placed on IR due to an ankle injury. His exit left Tyson Jackson and Ryan Succop as the only players left from the woeful Scott Pioli 2009 draft class.
