Cassel: Grade-two Sprain of MCL

As reports swirl about just how bad Matt Cassel’s knee injury is, he has told a friend it isn’t as severe as it could have been according to SI’s Peter King.MattCasselInjury3

Cassel, meanwhile, told a friend he’d suffered a grade-two sprain of the medial collateral ligament Saturday night against Seattle.  It’s a two-week injury, so it’s unknown if he’ll face the Ravens at Baltimore in the season opener.

Then again, it’s probably best if he doesn’t face the Ravens.  Give that one to Brodie Croyle or Tyler Thigpen, then have Cassel ready to beat the Raiders in a winnable game in Week 2.

If this is true — and King’s sources usually are best in the business — then this is good news.  Earlier I was talking about holding Cassel out until Week 4 at Arrowhead against the Giants.  That would now be extreme if it truly is a two week recovery.

I have to agree with King though, even if he is healthy enough in time for the season opener, you have to give him a full week to practice with the starters in preparation for the Raiders game.  No need to have Cassel test his knee against a very tough Baltimore defense.
