One of Scott Pioli’s first draft picks, Alex Magee, was arrested on Monday in Tampa Bay. According to the police report, Magee was charged with possession of marijuana and an expired tag greater than six months.

The officer smelled marijuana and searched the vehicle. The investigation turned up a “misdemeanor amount of field test positive marijuana”, according to the report.

Magee, 24, was traded to the Bucs in October 2010. He was drafted by the Kansas City chiefs in 2009 after a college career at Purdue.

The report says Magee was released on his own recognizance.

Clearly Magee was wrong for the Chiefs in more way than one.

When Kansas City only got a fifth-round pick for a guy they had just taken two rounds earlier, it was seen as quite the loss for Pioli. Getting picked up for some marijuana doesn’t mean Magee can’t play, but it helps take away some of the sting from such a quick loss in value.

The Kansas City Chiefs made the “big” trade around the NFL today at the deadline, dealing Alex Magee to the Bucs, according to Adam Schefter.

Kansas City traded former third-round pick, defensive end Alex Magee, to Tampa Bay for draft conditions.

In return for DE Alex Magee, the Chiefs get back a 2011 draft pick from the Buccaneers, but Tampa Bay also gets one as well.

There are two ways to look at this one.

The Chiefs are now without 4 of their 8 picks from 2009, an amazing number after only one season. This is just one more indictment of Scott Pioli’s first draft class.

Magee was on the bubble coming out of training camp, barely making the 53 man roster. The fact that Pioli was able to get any sort of value back for Magee — even if it’s just the right to swap draft positions with Tampa — is a minor miracle. Pioli should also be given credit for not hanging on to Magee for the same of hoping that one of his draft picks worked out. He — and presumably Todd Haley — knew that there wasn’t a place for Magee in Kansas City and found a way to get something back for the third-round pick.

With Bernard Pollard and Magee failing to fit in with the new regime, I wouldn’t expect any more Boilermakers to show up on the Chiefs draft board in 2011.

WR Chris Chambers, S Kendrick Lewis, FB Tim Castille, S Reshard Langford, LB Justin Cole, DE Alex Magee, RT Ryan O’Callaghan and DE Tyson Jackson.

I’m really surprised to see Chambers, Lewis, O’Callaghan and Jackson all out. All had practiced in full and seemed poised to start against the Texans.

Making the call on Chambers with a hand injury he played with last week and O’Callaghan readjusting to the speed of the game would both point to the Chiefs wanting to air the ball out. There has been plenty of discussion about just how much (or how little) Matt Cassel will be able to throw the ball around the field. Replacing Chambers and his injured hand with speedster Jeremy Horne and keeping the cohesion along the offensive line makes me believe we will see the Kansas City offense open up.

Obviously Shaun Smith’s strong play gives Romeo Crennel a little wiggle room. What bothers me is if they knew things would be taken this slowly, why have Jackson practice during the bye week? If you are intent on keeping him on the slow track, keep him on the sidelines for an extra week.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released their list of 8 inactive players for today’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

CB Jackie Bates, FB Mike Cox, S Reshard Langford, LB Charlie Anderson, LB Justin Cole, DE Alex Magee, DE Tyson Jackson, RT Ryan O’Callaghan

It was expected for Jackson and O’Callaghan to once again be out, but it’s a mild surprise to see Magee back to the inactive list. With the team so thin along the defensive line, it says a lot about his progress — or lack thereof — that he still can’t help this team every Sunday.

Good to see McGraw is going to be back on the field, though hopefully rookie Kendrick Lewis continues to get the majority of the playing time next to Eric Berry. As we’ve seen, it’s very dangerous having two rookies at safety, but it is also a great learning experience as these two learn the ropes together.

With McGraw back in the fold, it’s easier for the Chiefs to sit Langford down. He was a late addition to this week’s injury report with an ankle issue and even though he isn’t a main component to the defense, he would have been needed if McGraw couldn’t go.

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced their eight inactive players for tonight’s game against the San Diego Chargers as The New Arrowhead.

WR Jeremy Horne, CB Jackie Bates, FB Mike Cox, LB Cameron Sheffield, LB Justin Cole, DE Alex Magee, OT Ryan O’Callaghan and NT Anthony Toribio.

The most important name there is O’Callaghan. Not surprising considering he has missed most of the past two weeks. That means Barry Richardson will need to stay upright tonight because there are no players currently on the roster with extensive tackle experience able to fill in. If something were to happen to Richardson, the Chiefs would probably be best off shifting Brian Waters over, since he is smart enough to know everyone’s assignments.

The other name that jumps out immediately is Jeremy Horne. After a promising preseason, the undrafted rookie was coming into tonight as the Chiefs best speed option down the field. This move is also more proof that Dexter McCluster was never going to miss this game, just as we had reported all weekend long. If McCluster had actually been close to not playing, Kansas City would want to have Horne on the active roster as insurance for the “ailing” rookie.

If you needed to know how close Magee was/is to being a former Chief, look not further than him being inactive even though the team isn’t exactly rolling with a ton of depth on the defensive line right now. Especially when you consider that newcomer Toribio isn’t ready to contribute, it’s especially glaring that Magee has been left off the gameday roster.

The Kansas City Chiefs held their first practice of the regular season on Monday and just like the end of the preseason were not able to get everyone on the field. Josh Looney and Bob Gretz took note of the the players working in the rehab zone and a couple changes from the preseason.

On the sidelines were: OT Ryan O’Callaghan, OLB Cameron Sheffield, DE Alex Magee and practice-squad G Darryl Harris.

O’Callaghan and Sheffield were in t-shirts and shorts while Magee had a helmet on, but did not practice. The rest of the squad wore full pads.

A few Chiefs have changed jersey numbers for the regular season.

WR Jeremy Horne will switch from #8 to #11.

NT Anthony Toribio will wear jersey #98.

Though both players are on injured reserve, WR Chandler Williams and RB Tervaris Johnson were both issued new jersey numbers as well. Williams now owns #8 while Johnson will wear #38.

With the Chiefs in full “Charger mode” it’s more than a little worrisome that O’Callaghan is still unable to practice. If he can’t get on the field over the next couple of days, there is no way the Chiefs don’t make a move for another player to help out at tackle. If Richardson were to go down in Monday night’s game, you would be looking at Jon Asamoah or one of the centers trying to play right tackle and that’s not going to happen. Keep your eyes squarely on the waiver wire this week, because the only player on the practice squad on the offensive line is Bobby Greenwood who is still learning how to play on that side of the ball.

Sheffield and Magee weren’t in a position to contribute much right out of the gate so their presence on the sidelines isn’t anything to worry about. You want a full squad workout but the team can wait on those two to get back to 100%.

The Kansas City Chiefs made their first cuts over the weekend and will make another roster move this afternoon on the way to next week’s 53-man roster limit.

Over the past month, we have taken a look at which players will likely make up “The Right 53″ and today the Kansas City Star tries to predict what Scott Pioli and Todd Haley will do. Here are the only differences between Adam Teicher’s list and ours with some thoughts.

Offensive line: Ike Ndukwe over Colin Brown.

The offensive line still could have some shifting as we find out just how much Pioli and Haley value Colin Brown in his second year. It doesn’t look good that when Ryan O’Callaghan went down with an injury that Barry Richardson jumped him on the depth chart, but I still keep going back to the amount of time that the team has invested in Brown’s potential. Unless they feel he will make it to the practice squad, I think Brown is a keeper.

Defensive line: Goes with six instead of seven, no Alex Magee.

As I said last week, Magee looks every bit of a camp casualty. If he makes the team, it will be awfully hard for Haley to continue preaching that he doesn’t care how a player got on the roster. Right now it looks like he will make the team due to being taken in the third-round last season.

Linebackers: David Herron over Pierre Walters.

The Chiefs might like Herron’s play on special teams, but don’t forget that he was flagged for a 15-yard penalty on a 41-yard Dexter McCluster kick return this past weekend. The Chiefs cannot survive if they commit stupid taunting penalties.

Defensive backs: Takes ten instead of nine, Mike Richardson as the extra player.

I would be surprised if they decided to take an extra DB over a seventh player along the defensive line. If Maurice Leggett is a few weeks away from practicing, maybe they keep ten initially. But if he can get cleared to play by Week 1, I think nine is the magic number in the defensive backfield.

The Chiefs hit the (indoor) field for their eleventh OTA in Kansas City today as they prepare for a mandatory mini-camp this weekend. If today was any indication we should see plenty of different faces rotating with the first team on both sides of the ball. As Adam Teicher notes, there were a handful of players that made their offseason debut with the starters.

Alex Magee, Shaun Smith, Dion Gales and rookie Jeffrey Fitzgerald of Kansas State got some starters’ snaps on the defensive line. Andy Studebaker and Pierre Walters took some turns at linebacker.

On the offensive side, Casey Wiegmann replaced Rudy Niswanger for some snaps at center and Barry Richardson stood in for Ryan O’Callaghan at right tackle.

Not a huge surprise on the offensive side of the ball.

We should see Wiegmann and Niswanger go back and forth through most of training camp in what should be a great battle to watch. I don’t see Richardson as a guy that will push O’Callaghan for the starting job so much as Todd Haley and Charlie Weis making sure he’s prepared if needed.

The names popping up on defense are much more intriguing.

Magee was mostly invisible during his rookie year, which isn’t a shock considering the learning curve for defensive linemen. Could he be one of these players ready to take a huge leap forward his sophomore year? Magee showed a special sort of versatility during his time at Purdue that could get him on the field plenty in Romeo Crennel’s system.

Smith and Gales will need to help out Ron Edwards at nose, especially if Glenn Dorsey isn’t going to get much run inside.

Two guys to watch closely once the pads go on are Fitzgerald at defensive end and Walters at outside linebacker.

I would argue that Fitzgerald is the most athletic lineman (on either side of the ball) that the Chiefs have. We don’t know just how that will translate to the field, but when it clicked during his time at Virginia and Kansas State, Fitzgerald was very impressive.

We saw a little (okay, very little) of Walters last year, but don’t overlook the fact that he stuck on the roster from start to finish last season and an undrafted free agent. That’s something draft picks Quinten Lawrence and Javarris Williams weren’t able to do. Like Fitzgerald, Walters brings a unique set of physical gifts to the table that could be a huge addition to the defense if he can take a big step in his second season.

The Kansas City Chiefs were back on the practice field this afternoon and this time without the rain. Today the information comes from Josh Looney @ KCChiefs.com and the staff at UWRF. Bob Gretz of CBSSports.com is in Canton for Derrick Thomas’ HOF induction.

DE Tyson Jackson made his camp debut with the Chiefs after ending his holdout. LB Wes Dacus was released to make room on the roster for Jackson. Sitting out the afternoon practice were DaJuan Morgan, Kolby Smith, Monty Beisel, Zach Thomas, Wade Smith, Demorrio Williams and Mike Vrabel.

The team opened practice in shoulder pads and helmets, just as they have for every second practice of two-a-days during training camp.

Jackson participated in full at every drill during practice. He quickly learned the training camp rule: jump off sides and you run. He was also learning plenty of other things as practice went along. D-line coach Tim Krumrie pulled Jackson to the side before the single sled drill to let him know just what was expected of him.

During the one-on-one session with WRs and DBs, Amani Toomer made a nice catch on a deep route.

Jackson began the 11-on-11 “team run” portion of practice with the first team defense, lining up opposite Glenn Dorsey.

Jamaal Charles broke free for two big runs. The first came on an inside hand off between C Rudy Niswanger and G Mike Goff. He busted through the hole and went untouched for 15 yards. Then he went off right tackle for another big gain. Later the offense shined with a great play-action pass by Matt Cassel. The session only lasted 12 plays, which drew boos from the crowd when the horn sounded.

CBs Travis Daniels and Ricardo Colclough both knocked passes down during the 11-on-11 session. But the defensive play of the session came when rookie CB Donald Washington broke up Tyler Thigpen’s last second heave to Jeff Webb in the endzone.

For the first time during training camp, Todd Haley gave his players a break. He let the team — except the QBs — take their shoulder pads off and finish practice just in their helmets.

During the 7-on-7 session, the defense took the spotlight back from the offense. Cassel attempted a pass to Bowe, who failed to come back for the ball. That allowed Brandon Carr to swat the ball out of the air. Later, Bernard Pollard took a Cassel interception to the house for a touchdown.

The offense ends the red zone portion of practice on a high note. Amani Toomer caught a ball in traffic for a touchdown.

Haley’s parents, Dick and Carolyn, watched practice from the sidelines. After practice, the Chiefs head coach pulled Larry Johnson to the side to personally introduce him to his parents. The four had a long conversation before Johnson left to meet the media.

So good to finally have Tyson Jackson in the fold. And I have to say, I’m a little surprised he jumped right in with the first team. He explained that he passed Haley’s conditioning test, but I have to believe in order to run with the starters immediately that he destroyed it. Now, if Zach Thomas and Mike Vrabel can get back into pads tomorrow we can see what the new look Chiefs defense actually looks like. I would have rather Jackson was here from the start to get with the program, but this past week of reps for Alex Magee were huge for him. This holdout may end up being a good thing for the defense if Jackson proves to be a quick study.

With training camp on the horizon, the Chiefs have signed two more players from their 2009 draft class, reports Scout.com.

According to a league source, third-round pick DE Alex Magee and sixth-round pick WR Quinten Lawrence were the latest to agree to deals.

Terms of Magee’s deal weren’t immediately available, but it’s believed he agreed to a three-year deal.

Lawrence, out of McNeese St. University, signed a three-year, $1.275 million deal that includes a signing bonus of just over $90,000.

And here we go. Now all that are left are fourth-round pick CB Donald Washington and the third overall pick in the draft, DE Tyson Jackson. The news of Washington agreeing to a deal should be coming down shortly, with Jackson being the only question mark as the Chiefs take off for camp.
