With only 20 players left to announce as part of the NFL Network’s Top 100 Players of 2011 series, it appears Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles will end up being the only Texas Longhorn to make the list. Cedric Golden looked at the other UT players that could have made it in the past and who might end up giving Charles a run for his money.
Ricky Williams would have made previous lists, but he’s on the downside of his career. Vince Young? Don’t ask. Cedric Benson? He has to make a Pro Bowl first.
I hope the NFL Network will do this every offseason. There are other former Horns I expect to break through and crack the top 100 over the next couple of seasons: Tennessee safety Michael Griffin, Washington linebacker Brian Orakpo and Green Bay tight end Jermichael Finley.
What about Charles’ current teammate LB Derrick Johnson, fresh off signing a brand new contract? Or maybe the running back’s best friend, Seattle Seahawks S Earl Thomas?
As Golden notes, there was no shortage of Texas players in the NFL last season. We also saw four more taken in April’s draft, meaning there should be at least one or two that join Charles on this list next season.
