Chiefs Add Three To Practice Squad

The Kansas City Chiefs continued to tweak their practice squad on Tuesday, adding three players, seeing two leave for other 53-man rosters and cutting another.

Added to the Chiefs practice squad were wide receiver Jerrell Jackson, running back Eric Kettani and linebacker Ridge Wilson. They will take the places of tight end Jake Byrne, fullback Toben Opurum and wide receiver Fred Williams.

Jackson comes to Kansas City as a guy that is very familiar with the area. He starred at University of Missouri, catching 113 passes for 1,434 yards and six touchdowns before going undrafted in 2012. Jackson spent time with the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears before landing with the Chiefs.

Kettani signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of Navy in 2009 before leaving to serve. He returned to the Patriots in July of 2011 and was on and off New England’s practice squad for the 2011-12 seasons. Kettani moved on to the Washington Redskins practice squad in September of last year and stayed in Washington until he was released this year in August.

Head coach Andy Reid and his staff were already familiar with Wilson. They signed him as an undrafted free agent out of West Alabama back in May. He showed plenty of promise through training camp and made it all the way until final cuts. If anything, he’s the perfect example of how making an impression during the summer can stay with a team throughout the season.

Opurum has been on and off the Chiefs practice squad several times after being released as part of final cuts. This last stretch on the practice squad started back on December 3 and he leaves to become a member of the Houston Texans 53-man roster.

Byrne came to Kansas City just last week, but his time was cut short by an opportunity to join the 53-man roster of the San Diego Chargers.

Williams joined the Chiefs the same day as Byrne. He had an impressive two-year stay with the San Jose Sabercats of the AFL. In two seasons he caught 137 passes for 1,698 yards and 32 touchdowns while also returning 63 kicks for 1,193 yards and three touchdowns.
