The Kansas City Chiefs filled out their practice squad with a familiar player: kicker Matt Szymanski. He spent training camp with the Chiefs and after being released returned to Kansas City for a week in November on the practice squad.
Szymanski allows special team coach Tom McMahon to give both kicker Ryan Succop and Dustin Colquitt some rest during the week and that’s about it.
Even teams as bad as the Chiefs can’t count on the practice squad to provide major contributors from one year to the next, but it’s nice to at least have the option. Kansas City should be set with both specialists for the near future, though that’s assuming Colquitt is re-signed.
I suppose Colquitt could end up walking after the season in another Clark Hunt cost-saving move, but even then they aren’t going to turn to a guy that was a place kicker in college but can fill in as a punter… right?
There’s no reason to get worked up over a practice squad player, but keeping a specialist on the practice squad just makes no sense.
