Oklahoma Thunder, a team playing in the World Football League, are 8-0 and won their last game 94-0. Yes, ninety four to zero. One of their offensive stars may soon get a tryout with the Kansas City Chiefs.
According to assistant coach Thom Roundtree, Thunder first string quarterback Orrick “Rico” Watkins turned in an impressive effort in their latest victory. Roundtree also said Watkins appears to have a possible shot at trying out for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Watkins played his college ball at North Carolina A&T. He was a 2004 Mid Eastern Athletic Conference preseason second team selection.
In the 2005 Draft, Watkins was listed at 6’5″, 219 and ran a 4.82 40-yard-dash. He received a Scouts Inc. rating of 20 and went undrafted.
I bet Matt Cassel is worried about keeping his starting job right about now. For what it’s worth, Cassel — drafted in the same ’05 draft Watkins was eligible for — wasn’t even rated by Scouts Inc. Scott Pioli likes to search for talent, but I have a hard time believing there’s much to Watkins’ “tryout” with the Chiefs.
