Chiefs Finalize Coaching Staff

The Kansas City Chiefs announced today that Todd Haley has finalized his coaching staff for 2010.  They have officially added Bernie Parmalee, Otis Smith and Emmitt Thomas to the staff.

Bernie Parmalee (Tight Ends): Parmalee spent the past five seasons at Notre Dame, working as the tight ends/assistant special teams coach (2005-06) and tight ends coach (2007-09). He has three years of NFL coaching experience with Miami (2002-04), where he coached tight ends in 2004.

Otis Smith (Defensive Quality Control): Smith joins the Kansas City staff after previously working as assistant secondary coach with Philadelphia (2008).  He also served as an NFL minority fellowship coach with Philadelphia (2007) and New England (2006).  He played in two Super Bowls with New England, earning a Super Bowl XXXVI ring with the Patriots.

Emmitt Thomas (Defensive Backs): A veteran of 42 NFL seasons as a player and a coach, Thomas joins the Chiefs coaching staff after an eight-year coaching stint with Atlanta (2002-09), where he most recently served as assistant head coach/secondary.  He also served as the Falcons interim head coach for the final three games of the 2007 season.  Thomas served as an NFL defensive coordinator for seven seasons, working in that role for Minnesota (2000-01), Green Bay (’99) and Philadelphia (’95-98).  He also served as an NFL assistant with Washington (’86-94) and St. Louis (’81-85), earning a pair of Super Bowl rings with the Redskins.

Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Chiefs Hall of Fame in ‘86, Thomas played cornerback for 13 seasons with Kansas City (’66-78).  He won two AFL titles with the Chiefs and was a member of the club’s Super Bowl I squad, as well as the club’s ‘69 team that claimed a victory in Super Bowl IV.

Top to bottom a solid coaching staff.

I’m very excited to see Todd Haley reach out to Thomas and bring him into the fold.  After he was let go by the Falcons, it seemed like a perfect fit, not only because of his experience coaching but also his deep ties to this franchise.

Todd Haley will be meeting with the media later on today to talk about the entire staff and is expected to have both Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel with him.
