Just a quiet Wild Card Saturday around Kansas City? Not so fast. The Chiefs plan to remove the interim tag from Romeo Crennel and name him to replace Todd Haley, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The only other person confirmed to have interviewed for the position was Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. Former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio was said to be coming to Kansas City for an interview on Friday and multiple outlets reported it as fact, but he told Jay Glazer it wasn’t happening.
No matter who GM Scott Pioli and owner Clark Hunt ended up speaking with, it’s pretty clear by the lack of candidates they never intended on hiring anyone but Crennel. He’s the safe pick that is popular with the players (for now) and probably most important to Hunt, he’s a cheap option. Unlike a lot of the guys that would be a “sexy” choice and bring with them a big price tag, Hunt will be able to keep Crennel on board for significantly less money.
Now the focus must immediately shift to who Crennel brings in to be his coordinators. Odds are one of those two hires will be the favorite to take over for Crennel sooner rather than later. Remember, he is the second oldest head coach in the NFL and this is a young man’s league. It isn’t unreasonable to think this won’t be Crennel’s team for more than a few years.
