Chiefs Late Round Safety Option

As time was winding down on teams to work out players before the draft, the Kansas City Chiefs were sure to get one last look at a safety.  No, not Eric Berry, Taylor Mays or Earl Thomas.  It was Wisconsin’s Chris Maragos, according to The Journal Times.

“I think he’s one of those guys, down the line, in the sixth or seventh round or something, who has got some stuff going for him,” said Milwaukee native Gil Brandt, the personnel director of the Dallas Cowboys’ Super Bowl teams of the 1970s who now writes for nfl.com.  “He really worked out well at that Pro Day.

“He was unbelievable in the short shuttle.  He did a 3.98 short shuttle which is just unbelievable.  And then he was 10.99 in the 60-yard shuttle.  Those are fantastic times.  What it means is he’s got athletic ability.

“He’s not the tallest kid in the world, but I’m a big believer in these kinds of guys.”

“I’ve spoken to anyone from GMs to position coaches to head coaches to scouts,” the 23-year-old Maragos said.  “I just worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs about a week ago and I flew to Detroit and visited with the Lions.  And right after that, I went down to Jacksonville to visit with the Jaguars.”

“I keep reminding myself, it’s not how you get to the NFL, it’s how you stay there,” Maragos said. “However it shakes out, I want to have a good career.”

I’d be shocked if the Chiefs didn’t end up selecting two safeties, no matter what they do with the fifth overall pick.  You would figure one would be a guy that could compete to start right away and the other would be for depth.  I’ve had my eye on Myron Rolle, but if Scott Pioli wants to wait until the last two rounds, pick up an extra pick and select Maragos, he looks a lot like he fits “the right 53″.

He worked his way from walk-on receiver at Western Michigan to starting free safety at Wisconsin, so you know he’s got the competitive fire that Todd Haley and Pioli are always looking for.

Of course, with his pro day numbers rating as some of the best in the country, the Raiders could be looking at Maragos in the second round.

Check out a highlight video of Maragos after the jump.
