The Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers will play Sunday afternoon as scheduled, despite the terrible circumstance surrounding the death of Jovan Belcher.
After news broke of Belcher’s murder of his girlfriend before his suicide at the Chiefs practice facility, the league had informed the Panthers they should prepare to keep their travel plans to Kansas City. However, the Chiefs didn’t announce until hours later a decision was made.
“After discussions between the league office, Head Coach Romeo Crennel and Chiefs team captains, the Chiefs advised the NFL that it will play tomorrow’s game vs. the Carolina Panthers at its originally scheduled time.”
Crennel and GM Scott Pioli had confronted Belcher Saturday morning and saw him turn the gun on himself. A team spokesman said Crennel will be on the sidelines and coach his team.
I thought initially the game would be pushed at least a day, but ultimately the call should belong to Crennel and his players. If they want to be out on the field Sunday afternoon — no matter the reason — then there is no doubt in my mind that’s where they should be.
