The Oakland Raiders decision at quarterback between Carson Palmer and Kyle Boller has been the story of the week, but it is a question about another key player that is being overshadowed.
Kicker Sebastian Janikowski has been bothered with a flare up of a hamstring injury, leaving him “Questionable” for Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. While head coach Hue Jackson tried to down play the injury on Thursday, the team’s actions have raised some serious concerns.
According to Jerry McDonald, the Raiders brought three free agent kickers in for a workout: Rhys Lloyd, Ricky Schmitt and Dave Rayner.
Even if the Raiders are able to keep Janikowski active on Sunday and avoid signing a guy off the street, the Chiefs have to feel better about their chances. You wouldn’t normally say that about a kicker, but this isn’t your normal kicker.
The leg of Janikowski adds the ability for the Oakland offense to pretty much attempt a field goal any time they cross the 50. He has already hit 12-of-13 attempts this year including five of six from beyond 50 yards.
