The Kansas City Chiefs have signed undrafted free agent safety Mario Russell from Carson-Newman.
Scouts Inc. assigned a rating of 30 to Russell and ranked him as the 72nd safety.
Russell is your typical big fish in a small pond as the 6-feet, 200 pound safety was the star of the Carson-Newman defense his final three seasons in Jefferson City. Last year in 11 games, Russell ranked second on the team in tackles with 83 and added seven passes defensed, two sacks, one interception.
In 2007, he teamed up with current Chief Anthony Toribio as a starter at Carson-Newman.
Safety is a position that an undrafted player like Russell might have a chance to stick. Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis are the clear starters, but beyond that it’s wide open deep in the Kansas City secondary.
