It may have been an All Star game, but Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson treated it like it was just another game. That means he was all over the field making plays.
Johnson helped lead Team Rice to a tight 22-21 victory Sunday night, finishing with nine tackles, a forced fumble and a massive hit on Chiefs teammate Jamaal Charles. When the dust — well, in this case, rain — settled, Johnson was the defensive MVP for his team.
After the game, Johnson talked about the hit he delivered on Charles.
“If you stand back, he’s going to make you look pretty bad, so I had to go out and really give it to him,” Johnson said. “I would never try to hurt my teammate at all, but compete a little bit.”
Were you a bit surprised that Johnson would lay out his teammate like that? You’re not alone, it certainly seemed to catch Charles off guard.
“I didn’t expect it, but he’s out there doing his thing,” said Charles. “I can’t get mad at him — it’s just about football and you’ve just got to be ready.”
By the looks of it, Johnson sure does seem to be ready… to kick off next season.
