Draft: Kansas City Chiefs Select Ryan Succop, K, South Carolina as Mr. Irrelevant

The Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up the 2009 NFL Draft by selecting K Ryan Succop from South Carolina as Mr. Irrelevant (256 overall).

Scouts Inc. assigned a rating of 31 to Succop and ranked him as the 6th best kicker.

You can check out his South Carolina profile here.

ESPN.com’s analysis:

Succop displays above average leg strength and good versatility to handle place kicking duties and kickoffs. He needs some tweaking in his overall mechanics.

Paul Fogleman at the Hickory Daily Record talked to Succop about his thoughts going into Day 2 of the draft:

“To hear my name, that would be great because it’s really something I’ve worked hard for the last seven years. Now the opportunity is almost here, and it’s definitely exciting and hopefully will be rewarding.  I understand it’s tough for kickers to get drafted. Traditionally, maybe only two get drafted a year, but several teams have said they may not draft me as a kicker but sign me (as a free agent) on Sunday right after the draft.”

Well, Succop doesn’t have to wait to hear about free agent opportunities as he’ll have a chance to win the job in Kansas City.  At 6-2/220 he fits the bill as the type of true football player Scott Pioli says he is looking for.  This kid has a big leg, so he should have a shot at beating out Connor Barth in camp.  Welcome to KC, Mr. Succop-Irrelevant!  Hopefully he brings some of those ladies with him to training camp.
