Draft: Kiper Projects Russell Okung To Chiefs
In his first mock draft of the season, ESPN’s Mel Kiper projects the Kansas City Chiefs will select Oklahoma St. OT Russell Okung.
I think the Chiefs could use help at safety as well, but Berry likely won’t fall this far, and they’d be reaching on either of the two other safeties with first-round grades. Okung could solve two problems, making him a good value. He also could step in at LT and allow the Chiefs to move Brandon Albert to the right side. A pick that can pay immediate dividends for the Chiefs.
Every day I’m somewhere else with this pick. Assuming both Ndamukong Suh and Eric Berry are off the board, right now I would rather the Chiefs shoot for the homerun with a guy like Joe Haden out of Florida.
I know corner is far from the top of team needs right now, but he could step in immediately and start opposite Brandon Flowers and quickly become the No. 1 corner. He has the potential to be just as good as Darrelle Revis has been for the Jets.
Okung is a name that a lot of experts are earmarking for the Chiefs and I’m not going to complain if that’s the way Scott Pioli decides to go, but I don’t look at him and think he’s a sure thing at left tackle. Outside of Suh and Berry, there is no player I am more confident will become a star in this league.
You can get guys like Okung via free agency. Very rarely — if ever — do you get a shot at a top flight corner on the open market.
