Chargers Were After New Chief Garrett Brown
New Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Garrett Brown had to wait until after the draft to find a team, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t drawing a lot of interest, according to the Stamford Advocate.
Once he went undrafted, Brown and his agent ran through a list of the NFL teams that best suited his services. San Diego was one option. Brown interviewed with the Chargers a week before the draft. But it was Kansas City, Brown said, that showed the most interest and gave him the best opportunity to compete for a roster spot.
The Chiefs were the first team to call. It was a done deal. Brown said he signed at approximately 7 p.m. on Saturday.
“They didn’t draft any defensive tackles and they only have three on the team right now,” Brown said. “That gives me a good chance. Hopefully, I can make the two-deep and the 53-man roster by the end of August.”
Brown, a New Haven native, didn’t start playing football until his sophomore year at Fairfield Prep.
Brown played as a true freshman at Minnesota went on to become a two-year starter and captain. Brown had 99 tackles, five sacks and three forced fumbles in his four-year career.
Brown graduated from Minnesota in January with a sports management degree, but he isn’t ready to start pushing pencils just yet.
“I haven’t been playing football very long, but I’ve developed a love and passion for the game,” Brown said. “It’s something that I pride myself in. I would love to play football at the next level, instead of sitting at a desk every day. The last seven years have been incredible. I’m completely committed to becoming a Kansas City Chief now. Hopefully they have faith in me to play on Sundays.”
If you are picking between a team that drafted a defensive tackle and one that didn’t it seems like an easy decision to me. Brown is a guy that is still learning the position, so Romeo Crennel and his staff should have an easier time molding him than their other young players.
