One of the most important things a new head coach — in any sport — has to do is build a staff of assistants. For Missouri’s Frank Haith, one of those men may be Derek Thomas, bringing a Chiefs assistant coach much closer to his son.
Thomas, an assistant coach at Detroit Mercy and the son of Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Famer Emmitt Thomas, spent time at Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis before moving on to the college ranks with stops at Saint Louis, Minnesota, Illinois and UNLV. He was also the head coach at Western Illinois.
As Charlie Weis will be the first to tell you, it’s tough to beat having your kids nearby while you are working. Derek being out in Columbia isn’t exactly down the street from Arrowhead, but it’s a whole lot closer than Detroit. According to the not always reliable Wikipedia, Thomas’ daughter lives over 500 miles away, making it seem like Derek is right around the corner.
For what I have to imagine will the first time in quite a while, Emmitt will be a two hour trip away from being able to see his son work if he ends up joining the Big 12.
