When the Kansas City Chiefs kick off the preseason tonight, they will be without three players.
Tight ends Jake O’Connell and Tony Moeaki, as well as guard Darryl Harris will be held out, the team announced 90 minutes prior to kickoff. None of the three made the trip to Atlanta with the team.
Both Moeaki and Harris missed considerable practice time this week due to injuries suffered in training camp. O’Connell appeared to have left Wednesday afternoon’s practice early with some sort of injury. He had rallied together several impressive catches over the course of the last week.
In the preseason, the team is not required to make any players inactive. During the regular season, eight players must be declared inactive (a third quarterback may be included among regular season inactives).
The Falcons have announced 11 players scratched for this evening.
The team had previously announced that starting RT Ryan O’Callaghan would miss the game, which seemed out of no where and for good reason. O’Callaghan is healthy and will be out there looking to solidify his spot with the first team. The only downside is we won’t get to see as much of second year lineman Colin Brown against better competition, which would have been a nice measuring stick for him after spending his first year on IR.
With O’Connell joining Moeaki and Harris in Kansas City, there aren’t any surprises. Missing two tight ends gives Leroy Banks a chance to really make an impression as he could end up seeing the most time of anyone on the field tonight. The Chiefs seem to be loaded with players that can play guard now that Brian Waters is healthy, so Harris’ absence shouldn’t mean much to the offensive line.
