The injury to Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel is likely to force the team to bring in another signal caller. Now they won’t have to release anyone to make that happen due to losing LB Justin Cole to the St. Louis Rams.
Cole was the Chiefs practice squad when he was snatched up by the Rams, a team dealing with plenty of their own injuries.
Even though players on the practice squad practice with the team, they are basically free agents with certain restrictions. While they are free to sign with another team to join the 53-man roster, if that player’s original team is scheduled to play the team interested in signing them it must be done at least six days in front of the game. Obviously that’s not an issue in Cole’s case.
Cole will earn at least three game checks from the Rams if he stays on the active roster or not. That shapes up to just under $80,000, not too shabby for a guy that was earning $5,700 a week in Kansas City.
