It was just a matter of time before new head coach Romeo Crennel started to replace some of Todd Haley’s “guys” with his own. That happened on Monday when the Kansas City Chiefs hired Tom McMahon as special teams coach.
McMahon takes the place of Steve Hoffman, who came to Kansas City with Haley three years ago. Even if Haley had been retained, it’s hard to believe Hoffman would have stayed around considering how poor the Chiefs special teams play was last season.
It won’t be much of a relocation for McMahon, who spent the past three seasons with the St. Louis Rams. He just gets to be on the better side of Missouri now.
Joining Hoffman on the unemployment line will be wide receiver coach Richie Anderson and assistant offensive line coach Pat Perles. Look for one of them to show up wherever Haley lands his next job.
Assuming he doesn’t decide to make any big moves with the remaining staff, Crennel’s only major decision with the coaches will involve the offensive coordinator.
