With the 4th pick (68 overall) in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected G Jon Asamoah from Illinois.
Scouts Inc. assigned a rating of 86 to Asamoah and ranked him as the 2nd best guard.
You can check out his School profile here.
Very interesting pick here from Scott Pioli. After bringing in Ryan Lilja to play guard on the right side and Brian Waters still around on the left side, this is more for 2011 and depth in 2010 than a starting job right away. Todd Haley and Pioli will no doubt use their favorite word when talking about Asamoah’s presence: “competition”.
This is also a clear case of having to take the best available player at a certain position. When you have a chance to use your third round pick on a guy that has a chance to hold down a position for a decade and fits with what you are trying to do, how can you pass on him?
Thinking just about this season, I would have much rather seen the Chiefs take a linebacker or another safety, but this is a solid selection for the future of the Kansas City Chiefs.
