When the Kansas City Chiefs traded TE Tony Gonzalez to the Atlanta Falcons, I held out some hope that he could return to the team that drafted him to finish off his career. It would appear that possibility is now out the window with the announcement that he would be returning to the Falcons for one more year before retiring.
Gonzalez signed a one-year $7 million extension, one that he went on Twitter to reveal.
Very happy to be coming back next year to play. I love everything about the Falcons and the city of Atlanta.
A reunion between the Chiefs and the greatest TE they’ve ever known seemed like a good fit entering this season. Kansas City had just won the division and would likely just be looking for a player or two that could put them over the top when Gonzalez was a free agent. That, however, isn’t such a sure thing after a disappointing season that has already created a lot of questions for next year.
