The Kansas City Chiefs will welcome roughly 60 rookies to their training complex today for a three-day minicamp. In addition to the 21 players under contract, there will also be at least 36 rookies and first-year players on a tryout basis.
We’ve all heard the cliche: You never get a second chance to make a good first impression. And for the majority of these players, that impression is their only chance at a shot in the NFL.
Certainly it’s not Eric Fisher, Nico Johnson and other draft picks need to worry about their jobs this weekend. They are all guaranteed a ticket to training camp this summer. Instead it will be guys like local favorites Brad Madison (Missouri) and Toben Opurum (Kansas) that will do everything they can to turn heads.
Not only are most of these rookies fighting for a spot on the Chiefs roster, but if they make an impression with GM John Dorsey or head coach Andy Reid, it could help them land elsewhere in the league. A recommendation from a team your just tried out with goes a long way as training camp rosters are filled out.
