The Kansas City Chiefs had an amazing turnaround in 2013, but ultimately came up short of what their talent was capable of delivering. Now as they try to take that next step, GM John Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid will have to fill plenty of holes this offseason.
Without knowing how much money owner Clark Hunt is willing to spend in free agency, the NFL Draft could end up being the main provider of talent for the 2014 Chiefs.
Even though we’re still days away from the Super Bowl, mock drafts are starting to fly around at a fast and furious pace. The latest is a two-round mock from the folks over at SB Nation and it should come as no surprise that a wide receiver is the current prediction.
23. Kansas City Chiefs – Odell Beckham Jr., Wide Receiver, LSU
This is where the run on wide receivers could begin. The Chiefs need to add talent to the depth chart behind Dwayne Bowe. Odell Beckham Jr. is the next wideout on our board due to his speed and body control. Andy Reid would like to add a player like Beckham who can challenge defenses vertically.
Even though this mock has Beckham Jr. as the 4th WR off the board, he would be a fantastic value this late in the draft. Especially if he tests at the combine the way I expect him to, which should help push his stock even higher.
Beckham Jr. would not only give the Chiefs a weapon at wide receiver other than Dwayne Bowe, but he also could immediately serve as the replacement for Dexter McCluster in the return game if the diminutive receiver leaves Kansas City in free agency.
This mock is a two rounder, but the San Francisco 49ers were awarded the Chiefs second round pick as soon as Kansas City won eight games. If you’re curious, the Niners are predicted to take CB Aaron Colvin from Oklahoma.
