Meet the new starting quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs: Alex Smith.
The Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers have agreed to the terms of a trade for the quarterback, according to multiple reports. Jay Glazer of FOX Sports was the first to report the deal.
Word is Kansas City will send a second round pick this year to the 49ers along with a “similar” pick in 2014. Any deal for Smith cannot be official until the new league year starts on March 12.
If the compensation ends up starting with a second round pick in April’s draft, it’s already too high of a price. Sure, it shows the Chiefs are interesting in competing in 2013, but it’s hard to believe they needed to give multiple picks including one that is basically a first round pick.
Anyone that was down playing how bad this year’s rookie quarterback class is looking, this should put that idea to bed. Clearly new head coach Andy Reid was going to improve at the most important position on the field and he feels Smith is better than anyone available in the draft.
This deal is a huge haul for the Niners and puts a lot of pressure on Smith to be as good as he was as his best in San Francisco.
