The Kansas City Chiefs have already reportedly spoken with Jeff Fisher and Green Bay Packers OC Joe Philbin about their vacant head coach position and will also interview interim head coach Romeo Crennel. One more name you can add to the search is former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio.
Del Rio will interview on Friday, according to a report out of KCTV5.
The Jaguars parted ways with Del Rio after nearly nine seasons earlier this year after Jacksonville struggled to a 3-8 record. During his time running the Jaguars, he had a record of 68-71, including two trips to the playoffs.
I find it hard to believe that there is any real chance that Pioli decides Del Rio is a better fit to be the next Chiefs head than Crennel. He could, however, serve as the Chiefs defensive coordinator and give the team an option other than Josh McDaniels as a young “head coach in waiting”.
The 48-year-old is 16 years younger than Crennel and unlike McDaniels has at least proven he can do something right as the man in charge. Del Rio is far from a sexy choice in any capacity, but it appears Pioli and owner Clark Hunt don’t have the desire (or money) to go the sexy route.
