Peyton Hillis Earns Goat Of The Week Status

There is no shortage of blame to go around for the Kansas City Chiefs embarrassing 35-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. From the GM to the head coach right down to the 46th man on the roster.

In his Monday Morning QB column, SI’s Peter King puts the dunce cap on Chiefs RB Peyton Hillis, naming him one of his “Goats of the Week”.

Peyton Hillis, RB, Kansas City. What’s the one thing a big back never does on the goal line, particularly with his team’s season teetering on the brink of disaster? Hillis did it — fumbling with the Bills up 21-0 and 40 seconds left in the first half, trying to score to get the Chiefs back in a game they desperately needed. Why so desperate? Because K.C. has Drew Brees up next.

The thing about the Hillis fumble is that it doesn’t excuse the terrible play by the Chiefs before or after it, but it did seem to be the tipping point.

Matt Cassel had just brought the offense down to the one yard line with a 21 yard scramble. Despite his struggles, Cassel was more than happy to give his body up to try and get those final yards that would have made the game 21-7 heading into halftime.

You’d like to think the Chiefs would have treated that series as four down territory, but if they didn’t it would have ended with three points and given the team something to hang their helmets on going into the half.
