Dallas Cowboys Sign QB Kyle Orton

You can scratch one more name off the list of potential quarterbacks to “compete” with Matt Cassel to be the starter for the Kansas City Chiefs. Kyle Orton has left the Chiefs for a three-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys to serve as the backup to Tony Romo.

After losing his starting job with the Denver Broncos last year to Tim Tebow, Orton was given his release. The Chiefs claimed him on waivers to fill in for an injured Cassel.

Orton ended up appearing in four games with the Chiefs, three of those starts. Kansas City went 2-1 in games he started, including a huge 19-14 victory over the previously unbeaten Green Bay Packers.

Head coach Romeo Crennel spoke highly of Orton after the season and expressed interest in bringing the veteran back to compete with Cassel. GM Scott Pioli also spoke of competition for Cassel, who was bad before being hurt last season, but so far it is looking like the team never planned to push the incumbent.
