The Kansas City Chiefs have released their injury report for Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers and it doesn’t shed much light on the status of QB Matt Cassel. It also leaves some doubt about how many healthy bodies will be in the secondary.
Matt Cassel (illness)
Kendrick Lewis (ankle)
Donald Washington (ankle)
It was great seeing Cassel helping out Brodie Croyle at practice but I think that’s the most work we will see him do on the field this week. Todd Haley can talk about competitive advantage all he wants when it comes to naming his starter, that doesn’t mean anyone is buying it at this point.
Considering that Cassel couldn’t even work up a sweat, it’s awfully hard to imagine throwing him out into the San Diego heat against a defense that is playing for their season. The smart thing to do at this point is have Cassel move around as little as possible between now and Wednesday so his body can heal.
While not nearly as important as the status of Cassel, the Kansas City defense really could use Lewis and to a lesser extent Washington. We’ve seen what can happen when the secondary gets worn thin and if Lewis can’t go there wouldn’t be many options at safety when it comes to playing next to Eric Berry after Jon McGraw.
