The Kansas City Chiefs have kept their offensive focus on the ground game this season and that has put the fantasy spotlight squarely on Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones. However, after his second 3 TD performance of his up and down season, it’s Matt Casel that ESPN.com’s Matthew Berry lists among the players he “loves” this weekend.
It’s nothing fancy in KC, with many dinks and dunks and relying on yards after the catch. But against Jacksonville’s 28th-ranked secondary that gives up the second-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, that will work. Cassel actually has two 20-point games in his past three and I expect the Chiefs to, among other things, get Jamaal Charles and Dexter McCluster in space on short dump-offs and let them outrun an overmatched Jags defense. It won’t be pretty, but at the end of the day, Matt Cassel will have a nice fantasy day.
The Jaguars are facing so many issues on both sides of the ball right now, so it makes sense that Cassel could have some big time chances Sunday. But at the same time we have to remember that Todd Haley has proven he trusts Jones and Charles much more than Cassel. So we can talk about the opportunities the Chiefs will have in the passing game all we’d like, but the fact is that Kansas City is a running team.
Remember, the Houston Texans were sporting the league’s worst pass defense which the Chiefs were supposed to feast on. Cassel may have had three touchdowns, but he also continued sporting some terrible looking passes and only put up 201 yards.
If you are in dire straights and want to roll the dice with the quarterback of your favorite team, go nuts. I just can’t in good conscience recommend someone to start a player that has thrown for less than 200 yards in three of his five games this season.
