The Kansas City Chiefs selected Ole Miss S Kendrick Lewis in the fifth round of the NFL Draft earlier today. One person that is impressed with Lewis is the currently voice-less Mike Mayock of the NFL Network.
He plays faster than he times. Lewis’ stock fell because he ran 4.72 and 4.81. But when you put the tape on, you see No. 1 flying all over the field. He had two INTs, three forced fumbles, two kick blocks and he was voted a captain by his teammates. This pick has Scott Pioli’s fingerprints all over it. He’s a good character, try-hard, overachiever type that will work his tail off to get better.
I’m still bummed that the Chiefs (to this point) weren’t able to snag Myron Rolle, but don’t take that to mean I’m down on Lewis. I just feel that strongly about the potential of Rolle.
If Lewis had run a faster 40 time, he wouldn’t have ever been on the board for the Chiefs in the fifth round. It doesn’t hurt matters that he was roommates with Chiefs 2nd round pick Dexter McCluster at Mississippi.
Considering how awful the tackling was across the board for the Kansas City safeties last season, Lewis will be a welcome addition.
