News: Chiefs Claim LB Vince Redd Off Waivers

The Kansas City Chiefs have claimed OLB Vince Redd off waivers from the New England Patriots, according to the BostonVinceRedd Herald.

Redd was signed by the Patriots as an UDFA in 2008.  The 6-6, 260-pound linebacker played one season at Liberty after transferring from Virginia, where he spent two seasons under Al Groh, a long time friend of Bill Belichick.

Belichick said the decision to release Redd was a matter of trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

“Vince came in here as a free agent, made the practice squad and ended up playing at the end of the season.  I just think where we are defensively, there are probably other teams where he would fit a little bit better schematically in with the skills that he has.”

At his Pro Day before the 2008 Draft, Redd ran the 40-yard-dash in 4.56 seconds, had a vertical jump of 39″ and a broad jump of 9’10”.  He completed 13 reps at 225 pound in the bench

Just this morning I was talking about the possibility that both Pierre Walters and Jovan Belcher would make the team as UDFAs.  Well, that looks to be an even longer shot now.  Pioli obviously knows Redd better than any of the current rookies on the roster since he actually saw him in action at this level last season in New England.

To put Redd’s 4.56 40 time in perspective, Aaron Curry ran an identical time before this year’s draft to cement himself as the “safest pick”.  I understand (unlike the Raiders) that a 40 time doesn’t make a player, but to be able to run that kind of time with his size is still very impressive.
