A month after he was claimed on waivers, former Chiefs WR Will Franklin was released by the Detroit Lions today.
Franklin was a fourth round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008 but was put on waivers by the team’s new regime last month after reportedly showing up to the team’s first voluntary workout overweight. Four teams were reported to have put in a claim for Franklin: St. Louis, Indianapolis, Oakland and Philadelphia. All of those teams (and the Lions) drafted a wide receiver in last month’s draft.
Hopefully this puts to bed all of the “How could the Chiefs release Will Franklin” talk that bounced around last month. Just as I noted when he was first released, fans can get a little crazy when their team gives up on a local kid. I hope for Franklin’s sake one of the other teams that put in a claim will give him a look in training camp, but if the Detroit Lions can’t find room for you that doesn’t bode well for your future.
