News: Chiefs Release Brian Johnston
The Kansas City Chiefs have released defensive end/linebacker Brian Johnston, the fourth member of the final draft class of Carl Peterson and Herm Edwards to be released. Johnston was a 7th round draft choice last year out of Gardener-Webb and played in nine games as a rookie.
Johnston played at defensive end last season, but was working with the linebackers during the offseason.
The Detroit Lions, and new defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham, could be interested in Johnston according to Bob Gretz.
The Chiefs have already released WR Will Franklin, WR Kevin Robinson and TE Michael Merritt.
Johnston barely contributed last year and was being forced to learn a new position, making him ripe for the picking. Thankfully for Tamba Hali, he has been successful at this level in the past and should get every opportunity to show he can make the transition to linebacker. Also safe from the 2008 draft class are Glenn Dorsey, Branden Albert, Brandon Flowers, Brandon Carr and Brad Cottam. The next players from that draft class that are on the chopping block are Jamaal Charles, DaJuan Morgan and Barry Richardson. I think Charles can be an every down back in this league, but more importantly we don’t know if Todd Haley and Scott Pioli feel the same way.
