The San Diego Chargers have had a packed injury report this week as they prepare to welcome the Kansas City Chiefs to town. On Thursday they listed eight players on their injury report compared to just three for the Chiefs.
More important than the number of players for the Chargers was which players. WR Vincent Jackson, TE Antonio Gates and RB Mike Tolbert — all major contributors on offense — were all held out of practice on Thursday, putting their status up in the air for Sunday’s game.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that all three were back on the practice field for Friday’s tune-up practice, though that doesn’t mean they will all be ready to go. While Tolbert and Jackson were said to look good for Sunday, Gates left the practice field early on putting his status in doubt.
Jackson is coming off a monster game against the New England Patriots in which he caught 10 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns and is likely licking his chops just thinking about the kind of encore performance he can put together against a battered Chiefs secondary.
Gates didn’t have a catch last weekend, but opened the season with eight catches for 74 yards against the Minnesota Vikings. Considering the damage he has done vs. the Kansas City defense over the years and how badly the Chiefs have been burned by tight ends already this young season, it would be a huge boost if he was forced to sit out.
In the two games between the Chiefs and Chargers last season, Tolbert averaged over five yards per carry, including runs of 18 and 23 yards.
