The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Oakland Raiders 16-10 at Arrowhead Stadium. It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win and the Chiefs have already matched the victory total from last season. We now have 7 games to see if they can get to the 2007 win total of 4.
In the meantime, it’s a pleasure to hand out game balls after another victory.
Offense: Jamaal Charles
After being mostly ignored by Todd Haley last week in Jacksonville, Charles showed why that won’t happen again this season. He not only became the first Kansas City running back to go over 100 yards this season, but showed his big play ability with a 44 yard touchdown scamper. It was the only TD the Chiefs would score in the game and first they’ve scored all season on the ground.
Kolby Smith is still trying to get his game legs back and only managed 12 yards on 9 carries. If Charles had been given some of Smith’s carries, he certainly would have had an even better line than the final 18 carries for 103 yards.
Defense: Mike Brown
After arguably costing the Chiefs two games — Dallas and last week in Jacksonville — Brown saved this victory with a last second interception of Raiders QB Bruce Gradkowski. The ball on that play was tipped up by WR Darrius Heyward-Bey and away by Brandon Flowers before Brown did what Flowers was unable to do all day long: catch the ball.
Earlier in the game Brown picked off Gradkowski for the Chiefs first turnover of the game on the new Oakland quarterback’s second drive.
Hopefully Brown can spend his time during practice this week showing Brandon Flowers, an owner of a solid game himself, how to catch the ball before trying to take off in the other direction.
Special Teams: Ryan Succop
The Chiefs continue to have trouble getting into the end zone, but that’s not a problem when you have Succop kicking the ball. He was 3/4 on field goal attempts hitting from 25, 31 and 50 yards. His only miss was from 52 yards, a kick we’ve come to expect him to make but in a game that saw Sebastian Janikowski miss for the first time this season (from 45) it was clearly not an ideal kicking environment today in Oakland.
