You know the old sports cliche, the team is only as strong as your weakest link. Bob Gretz is ranking the Chiefs roster from 1-81 and today he covered the 53rd player or the person he feels would hold down the final roster spot when training camp breaks.
G/T Ikechuku Ndukwe
Evaluation – It’s hard to believe based on what we saw from Ndukwe last year that he’ll have a roster spot again for the ‘10 season. There’s a reason Bill Parcells was willing to trade him to his son-in-law – he wasn’t going to make the Dolphins roster. Very early, Ndukwe was found wanting as a tackle; he got three starts but was yanked in favor of Ryan O’Callaghan. The next two weeks he was inactive and played sparingly over the rest of the season. He’s not particularly strong, or quick of foot. He brings smarts and can play both guard and tackle; that versatility is the only ticket he really has to the 53-man roster.
When you are moving that 53rd man line, it’s safe to say that Ike is sitting right at the edge on either side.
Back when I put together my first stab at the final 53 man roster, I had Ndukwe as the 55th man, but easily could swap over to the other side of that due to his versatility on the line. Without a ton of depth along the offensive line, his ability to play both tackle — even if not spectacularly — and guard positions could go a long way to separate himself from tackle Barry Richardson for one of the final roster spots.
