Matt Cassel: From Zero To Hero

Fortunes turn quickly in the NFL.  No one has seen this more in the last few years than Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel.  He has gone from career backup to franchise QB and then quarterback of the future to being pushed out of town.

Cassel has once again experienced plenty the last couple of weeks.  Just two weeks ago SI’s Peter King named the Chiefs QB his “Goat Of The Week” for his bonehead game-ending INT against the San Diego Chargers.  After two straight wins, Cassel was awarded King’s “Offensive Player Of The Week“.

Kansas City QB Matt Cassel, the embattled one, completed 21 of 29 for 257 yards, with four touchdowns and no interceptions, and he brought the Chiefs back from a 24-7 deficit at Indianapolis.  It’s hard to feel more pressure than the Chiefs were feeling at 0-3, with questions about whether the coach AND quarterback would be back next year.  Cassel aced this test.

I think we would all argue the real test comes after the bye when the Chiefs have to to travel to take on the Oakland Raiders and follow that up with a visit from the division leading San Diego Chargers.

For now Cassel deserves all the credit in the world.  With his back against the wall and the Kansas City fans ready to punch his ticket out of town, it would have been easy for him to pack it in.  But he stepped up his game and has the Chiefs in position to get right back into the thick of the AFC West race going into the bye.
