It shouldn’t come as a surprise to any Kansas City Chiefs fan that Priest Holmes is among the best free agent signings ever. However, it is where Holmes ranks on Jason Cole’s Top 20 list that may make you turn your head.
13. Priest Holmes, Kansas City Chiefs, 2001: The mere mention of Holmes’ name should have a Pavlovian effect on any longtime fantasy football player. After back-to-back mediocre seasons with Baltimore, Holmes became a stat-mongering force in the NFL. He had at least 2,100 yards rushing and receiving for three consecutive seasons with the Chiefs, scoring 10, 24 and then 27 touchdowns before injuries started to pile up. While Holmes was clearly talented, he also benefited from running behind one of the great offensive lines of his time and took advantage of the wide-open nature of the Kansas City offense.
It’s easy to put guys like Drew Brees and Reggie White at the top of the list, but to me Cole is selling Holmes and the Chiefs short here. Those offensive lines were great, but no one made them look better than Holmes.
Considering he turned in some of the best seasons the league has ever seen, anything outside of the top 10 seems misguided.
