Following Chiefs practice in Kansas City, Todd Haley met with the media. Here are the highlights:
On Branden Albert:
“Getting better every day. It’s probably going to go down to the wire with him. He’ll be listed as questionable.”
Matt Cassel has taken a lot of hits. Are you concerned about his ability to sustain all these hits if he’s going to last the season at this rate?
“We have to be better and he has to be better. We’ve got to get the ball out quicker. We’ve got to do whatever we can to eliminate hits on the quarterback. That’s a fact of life. You don’t want a sitting duck back there that is just getting killed the whole game because he won’t last. We’ve got to do things to protect him scheme-wise; we’ve got to do a better job of coaching him to get the ball out quick. We’ve got to do a better job of executing our protections up front. That’s the plan.”
It seems like your opponent each week seems to have more injuries than you do. How much of that is mental?
“I don’t know. I just know the way we do it. It’s been made clear from way back at the start that we don’t want guys hanging around the training room or hanging around the injured area. We made it a more uncomfortable place in the training room. It’s not a fun place to lounge. We’ve made it clear to them that it’s not going to be tolerated. Now, obviously, things happen and there are injuries but as far as the aches and pains we’re going to practice and fight through.”
Can LaDainian Tomlinson and Larry Johnson still have the seasons they once had?
“To me they look like premier backs in the league.”
