Following the Chiefs practice today in Kansas City, Todd Haley met with the media.
On Derrick Johnson:
“He’s going to be listed as questionable. He participated in a limited portion of the practice, so he will be listed as questionable.”
How do you make up for WR Dwayne Bowe being slowed down?
“Just like any time somebody gets injured or misses or isn’t full speed, somebody is going to have to step up and play. The guys have been working hard and we’ve talked to them about anybody that’s backing up, to always assume your number is going to be called and be ready to go and be ready to step in and help the team win.”
The blitz package in Philadelphia from the late coach Jim Johnson is legendary. Has that continued?
“Looks like they’re carrying over a lot of the same stuff to me. I would say that it’s hard to see a lot of difference now. Coach (Jim) Johnson was the best as far as the timing and instincts, when he did and didn’t bring (pressure) and staying ahead of the curve, so that’ll be on the new guy to pick up from there. But it doesn’t look like a lot is different. I can’t give enough credit. To me, going against anybody in the league, Coach Johnson was the one.”
There isn’t any way to prepare for it is there?
“Great job of disguising, of either making it appear that they’re coming when they’re not or vice versa and that’s what is tough.”
How do you simplify it for the players so they’re all thinking alike when they need to?
“It may be something you do with one particular play; it may be something you do with one particular player who may have a certain assignment. There are a lot of different ways that you can try to combat it. We try to watch a lot of tape together as a group, everybody in the same room. Which I think when you’re playing like this, that communication helps as you watch tape together, whether it’s practice or tape of the Eagles defense. You have everybody in there at once and you try not to leave a lot of gray area amongst yourselves.”
It was the Bob Gretz show at the press conference! He was either the only person there or every other beat writer is in Haley’s dog house. I’m not sure which is more likely.
Interesting to hear Haley say Derrick Johnson is questionable after DJ told the media himself he wouldn’t be playing. I get that he doesn’t want to give up too much information, but when a player has already spoken out about his status, you would think it would be okay for the coach to do the same.
