Jamaal Charles, Justin Houston Miss Practice

The Kansas City Chiefs opened their week of practice for Sunday’s showdown with the Oakland Raiders without running back Jamaal Charles or linebacker Justin Houston.

Charles is still battling severe blisters on his feet, an injury that kept him from practicing at the beginning of last week as well. He ended up not only practicing, but leading the Chiefs offense in a win over the Tennessee Titans.

A more serious situation is brewing with Houston. The linebacker took a shot to the head/neck area last weekened and is undergoing protocol for a concussion. If he ends up showing symptoms we could be looking at a scary situation keeping him out weeks. Hopefully he’ll get the all clear Thursday or Friday and be ready to go against the Raiders.

Also missing practice was tight end Anthony Fasano and safety Kendrick Lewis. Fasano has been sidelined by knee and ankle injuries since Week 1, while Lewis hurt his ankle before last week’s game.

The Chiefs were able to get starting right tackle Eric Fisher back to practicing fully. He missed last week’s practices and the game against the Titans following a concussion suffered the week before.

It was only on a limited basis, but wide receiver Donnie Avery practiced with the shoulder injury that knocked him out of the game in Tennessee. He would be a big loss to the Kansas City offense as he’s proven to be one of quarterback Alex Smith’s favorite targets.

The Raiders injury report only has eight players, including running back Darren McFadden, who was limited. He wasn’t able to play in Oakland’s big win over the San Diego Chargers and with a bye week on deck the team could choose to give him a clean three weeks off.
