The NFL announced on Tuesday that Kansas City Chiefs K Ryan Succop has been named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Following a season in which it was a regular occurrence for a Chiefs player to be honored by the league, Succop is the first one to be singled out this year and it is well deserved.
The former “Mr. Irrelevant” helped Kansas City defeat the Minnesota Vikings by going five-for-five on field goals, including two from beyond 50 yards (54, 51).
Succop struggled through the first three games of the season, making just two of his five field goal attempts and very well could have been kicking for his job against the Vikings. Rising to the occasion in such a way is much more like the impressive rookie season Succop put together in 2009 instead of his mediocre 2010.
