Sproles’ Happy Homecoming
San Diego Chargers running back Darren Sproles was a star at Kansas State and Olathe North and for the first time in his four trips to Arrowhead Stadium as a pro he was able to cap off his homecoming with a touchdown.
“You dream of that as a kid when you grow up here,” Sproles said, “so it felt real good to finally get a score here.”
The Chargers caught the Chiefs in a blitz, and Sproles, as the hot receiver, caught the ball at the 30. He put a move on Chiefs safety Jon McGraw, a former K-State teammate, and outran McGraw and Brandon Carr to the end zone.
Earlier in the game, McGraw, a special-teams standout, and Sproles exchanged handshakes after a kick return by Sproles.
“It’s all love … one Wildcat to another,” Sproles said.
Well, before the game I said the Kansas City special teams units would have to bring their “A” game to keep Sproles in check on returns. His longest return was 18 yards, so I consider that mission accomplished. Unfortunately, the defense didn’t get the memo about Sproles’ explosiveness. The former Wildcat totaled 99 yards on offense, including making McGraw look silly on his 58-yard touchdown catch and run.
Sproles sure would look good in a Chiefs uniform next season.
