During his time with the Kansas City Chiefs, Scott Pioli’s draft record is (to put it nicely) less than stellar. Yet another one of his disappointing picks left town this week with the trade of WR Jon Baldwin to the San Francisco 49ers.
Pioli, now working for NBC Sports, talked to Cam Inman about what he saw — and still sees — in the third-year receiver.
“When we drafted him, we felt he was a tremendous height, weight, speed prospect,” Pioli said. “Even though he’s a big, tall guy, he has deceptive speed and covers more ground than you’d expect.
“He can make difficult catches that others can’t. He just needs to work on his consistency a bit.”
With some players you talk about consistency and it can be things fans and media never sees behind the scenes. With Baldwin it’s been glaring with every easy catch that bounces out of Baldwin’s hands over the last two seasons. Still, Pioli thinks the former Pittsburgh star has “very good” hands.
